Episode 13: Stephen Townshend
Today we’re going to explore a difficult and worthwhile topic- mental health in our industry.
Anxiety. Burnout. These aren’t just personal struggles- they also shape how we lead, how we make decisions, and how we treat the people around us. And yet we keep them mostly unspoken. Not because they aren’t real, but because silence feels safer- especially when our career is involved.
But silence isn’t neutral. It makes things worse. And leaders who do the hard work of understanding themselves- who name and work through what they’re carrying inside- don’t just feel better. They prevent the already-stressful job from becoming even more stressful.
Challenging the status quo isn’t just talking about mental health, but refusing to normalize the silence that benefits companies that would rather do nothing.
My guest today should be familiar to many of you- Stephen Townshend, host of Slight Reliability, who had me on his show in the previous crossover episode. Stephen is a Team Lead for SRE and DevOps at BlueCurrent, with deep roots in SRE and performance engineering. He’s also someone willing to talk honestly about his own experiences and struggles. Let that encourage you to be more honest about the stuff you’re carrying.
We’re not mental health professionals- but perhaps today’s episode can help plant some seeds to point you in the right direction.
